December 11, 2024Understanding The One Reason Trump Won
In recent years, the relentless pursuit of legal actions against Donald Trump by Democrats has turned into a double-edged sword. What many Democrats initially viewed as a way to hold Trump accountable for various alleged wrongdoings has, for most Americans, transformed into a symbol of political persecution. The repeated arrests, indictments, and courtroom dramas, often dubbed “lawfare,” have backfired spectacularly by bolstering Trump’s popularity and solidifying his image as a political martyr. This perception of unfair targeting is one of the primary reasons many believe Trump won the 2024 election.
From the start, Democrats made it clear that they were determined to bring Trump to justice. Numerous investigations, ranging from his tax returns to his role in the events of January 6th, turned into high-profile legal spectacles. Each arrest, indictment, and court appearance was widely covered by the media, often painting Trump as the villain. Yet, for many Americans, these repeated legal battles seemed to cross a line, shifting from legitimate accountability to what felt like a political witch hunt. Rather than damaging his reputation, this “lawfare” only served to rally Trump’s base and win over new supporters who felt the former president was being unfairly singled out.
The constant legal drama created an unintended backlash. Every time Trump faced a new indictment, his poll numbers either held steady or, in some cases, actually improved. For his supporters, each legal challenge became a rallying cry, a stark example of what they perceived as a corrupt system that was willing to bend or break the rules to keep him from returning to the White House. People who might not have been inclined to support Trump initially began to sympathize with him, seeing the ongoing legal battles as a sign that the political establishment feared his potential return.
The media coverage also played a significant role in this phenomenon. What might have started as a strategy to weaken Trump’s political viability turned into a relentless media circus that only increased his visibility. The saying “all publicity is good publicity” rang true for Trump, who has always excelled at using media attention to his advantage. With every headline, televised court appearance, and roundtable discussion about his legal woes, Trump remained front and center in the American political landscape. This constant exposure helped him dominate the 2024 Republican primary, pushing his potential GOP rivals to the sidelines as he continued to occupy the spotlight.
Moreover, many voters viewed the legal tactics used against Trump as inherently unfair and disproportionate. In the eyes of his supporters, and even among some moderates, the legal actions seemed politically motivated, especially given the perceived double standards. Instances where Democratic figures, like Hunter Biden or Hillary Clinton, faced scrutiny but received less severe consequences contributed to the belief that Trump was being unfairly targeted. This sense of injustice only furthered his appeal, casting him as an outsider fighting a corrupt political system.
The “rally around the flag” effect is a well-documented phenomenon in political science, where individuals support a figure more strongly when they believe that figure is under unjust attack. In Trump’s case, the repeated legal assaults solidified his image as a defiant underdog, willing to fight back against what his supporters saw as a powerful and biased establishment. This dynamic has only intensified his popularity among his core supporters while attracting a broader coalition of voters who see his struggle as emblematic of their own frustrations with the political status quo.
As a result, Trump’s standing in the 2024 election was stronger than many analysts initially predicted. The lawfare intended to bring him down had instead created a powerful narrative of resilience, survival, and political tenacity. In the eyes of his supporters, he has become a symbol of resistance against an overreaching and politically motivated system. It’s not just about Trump the man; it’s about what he represents which is a challenge to the establishment and a stand against perceived political corruption.
In 2024, this narrative of fighting back against unfair persecution was the key to Trump’s victory. His legal battles, far from damaging his chances, became the very engine driving his campaign, transforming him from a former president into a political icon fighting for his comeback. Lawfare is the main reason why Trump won the 2024 Election and all other explanations or excuses fall by the wayside in comparison.
