January 6, 2025Trump’s Media Cicadas Come Alive
The political landscape in the United States is poised for a dramatic shift, as the media which has largely operated in a dormant state during the Biden administration prepares to reawaken with ferocious vigor. This transformation is reminiscent of the cicadas that emerge every 17 years, noisily dominating the environment after an extended quiescence. Similarly, the press, subdued and restrained under President Biden, will erupt into action when Donald Trump reclaims the national spotlight as a central figure in American politics on January 20th, 2025.
During Biden’s tenure, much of the media has operated as a passive observer, often overlooking controversies or failures that would have been headline material during the Trump years. Gaffes, policy missteps, and ethical questions surrounding the Biden administration have frequently been met with tepid coverage or dismissed as unworthy of significant scrutiny. The press’s watchdog role, crucial in holding power to account, has seemed more like a lapdog function. Critics have pointed to this as evidence of a double standard, where Biden’s missteps are shielded from the relentless barrage of criticism that defined the Trump era.
But Trump’s return to the White House will trigger a transformation in the media akin to flipping a switch. The same outlets that have seemed content to hibernate during Biden’s presidency will rediscover their voice, unleashing a torrent of investigative reporting, opinion pieces, and outrage-driven commentary. Every statement, tweet, or policy proposal from Trump will be dissected and amplified. Journalists who appeared indifferent to Biden’s handling of issues like inflation, immigration, and foreign policy will suddenly become ardent champions of transparency and accountability.
This shift is not merely a reflection of Trump’s polarizing presence; it is a continuation of a broader trend within the modern media landscape. Trump is a ratings magnet, an irresistible force for both supporters and detractors. His brash style, controversial rhetoric, and willingness to challenge established norms create the kind of drama that fuels clicks, subscriptions, and advertising revenue. The media’s economic incentive to focus on Trump cannot be overstated. If Biden’s coverage represented a calm after the storm, Trump is the hurricane that guarantees a return to the frenzy.
Yet, this resurrection of the press will not be without consequences. The renewed media blitz against Trump is likely to deepen the divisions within the country. For Trump’s supporters, the media’s sudden resurgence will confirm their belief in institutional bias, reinforcing their distrust of traditional outlets. For his detractors, the press’s relentless focus will provide validation, cementing their opposition to his policies and persona.
Ironically, the media’s fixation on Trump may also bolster his appeal. Just as in 2016, when incessant coverage of his every move helped propel him to victory, a renewed media onslaught could energize his base and amplify his message. Trump thrives in the spotlight, and a reinvigorated press may unintentionally play into his hands.
In the end, the reawakening of the press in response to Trump’s return will reflect not just the peculiarities of his political style, but also the media’s role in shaping public discourse with their leftist bias. Like the cicadas, the press will reemerge with noise and intensity, creating a spectacle that captivates the nation and creates a concrete monument to their Orwellian Fake News.
