October 31, 2024Schwarzenegger & Trump’s Ongoing Feud over NBC’s The Apprentice
The rift between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Donald Trump over NBC’s The Apprentice goes beyond simple differences in style or leadership. It reflects a clash of personalities and egos, along with an apparent blame game over the decline of the show’s popularity. The situation ignited in 2017 when Schwarzenegger replaced Trump as the host of The Celebrity Apprentice, but the show’s ratings began to slip significantly. Trump, no longer affiliated with NBC as he had entered the presidency, openly criticized Schwarzenegger, attributing the show’s faltering performance to his successor’s supposed inadequacies as a host.
The Apprentice, which debuted in 2004, featured Donald Trump as the charismatic and often controversial host, using his bold personality and catchphrase “You’re fired!” to draw viewers. For nearly a decade, Trump’s presence became synonymous with the show, contributing heavily to its cultural footprint and ratings success.
However, when Trump left in 2015 to pursue a presidential bid, NBC looked for someone equally recognizable to fill his shoes. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Hollywood action star and former governor of California, seemed like a suitable replacement. Despite his fame and experience in the public eye, however, Schwarzenegger’s run on The Celebrity Apprentice struggled to capture the same enthusiasm as Trump’s tenure.
After Schwarzenegger took over, the show experienced a considerable drop in viewership. Ratings plummeted nearly 43% from the previous season’s premiere, fueling Trump’s claims that Schwarzenegger’s performance was to blame for the dip. Trump, now in office, took to social media multiple times to berate Schwarzenegger, tweeting that the new host had “destroyed” the franchise he once helmed and insinuating that he had tarnished a successful legacy.
In response to Trump’s criticism, Schwarzenegger fired back with his comments, attributing the show’s poor reception to factors beyond his control and suggesting that Trump’s divisive image was a significant reason for the decline. He argued that the audience might have been turned off by the franchise due to its longstanding association with Trump. Their back-and-forth continued, with Schwarzenegger publicly stating that he would not return as host, citing the contentious atmosphere surrounding the show and Trump’s criticisms as detracting from the experience.
Ultimately, The Celebrity Apprentice was canceled after Schwarzenegger’s season, but both men’s arguments on the matter persist. Trump continued to claim that the ratings failure rested on Schwarzenegger’s shoulders, while Schwarzenegger maintained that he inherited a series already weighed down by its association with Trump’s polarizing persona.
The rift over The Apprentice thus represents more than a simple television dispute. It underscores the contrasting personalities and public personas of Schwarzenegger and Trump, two titans of media and politics, whose divergent outlooks could not be more different about the show. Schwarzenegger hasn’t dropped the rift between the two men and endorsed Kamala Harris for president seemingly out of spite. Arnold who has been a Republican governor and famous for banging his nanny and knocking her up transversed political lines to get another jab at Donald Trump by endorsing Harris. Take note that when the leftist press reports with glee that Arnold went for Harris never gives it context about their long ongoing feud between the two men.
