A terrifying act of violence rocked Brooklyn’s Bensonhurst neighborhood when four young girls were brutally attacked inside their home. But amid the horror, it was the bravery of an 11-year-old girl and the rapid response of NYPD officers that turned a near tragedy into a story of survival.

Child Calls 911 After Brutal Knife Attack

In a chilling scene that has shocked New York City, Lun Chang Chen attacked four children—ages 8, 11, 13, and 16—with a meat cleaver inside their own apartment. The suspect, a family acquaintance with a known history of mental illness, unleashed the attack late at night.

Though critically wounded, the 11-year-old girl managed to call 911. “She and her siblings had been stabbed by her uncle,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. But the child didn’t know her address. Dispatchers sprang into action, triangulating her phone signal to locate the apartment building.

Armed Suspect Confronts Officers

Officers conducted a floor-by-floor search until they reached the apartment. Inside, they found a blood-soaked Chen holding a large meat cleaver. Blood was splattered across walls and floors.

Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Chen advanced toward the officers. With children severely injured just feet away, officers had no choice. They fired seven shots, striking Chen and ending the attack.

Children Rushed to Safety

Officers immediately provided first aid to the wounded children. A fifth child, a young boy, had escaped during the chaos and run for help. All four girls were taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition.

Police recovered the cleaver and an additional knife at the scene. Chen was also hospitalized and remains in critical condition. Investigators are now piecing together how a man with prior mental health issues was allowed access to children—and how such horror could unfold in what neighbors described as a quiet, peaceful home.

This horrific attack has reignited questions about protecting children, especially when trusted adults aren’t present. The swift action by a wounded 11-year-old and the NYPD response saved lives—but it shouldn’t take a tragedy for families to start talking about emergency plans.
