December 7, 2024Heavyweight Division After Fury vs Usyk 2
Looking back at October 9, 2021, on the trilogy between Fury and Wilder I realized something. The trilogy took it out of both men. Think about what they have been doing ever since that trilogy. Fury gets knocked on his ass by a guy who’s not even a boxer. Then, he takes his first loss of his career handily by a smaller dude. Wilder starts losing, Fury starts losing, I think these men will look back in time and realize they gave everything in that trilogy.
Deontay and Tyson are just not the same anymore. They’ve got to ask themselves if they want to stick around not being 100%. They’re both rich men and they need to start thinking about their health. But I’ve always said, like Mick telling Rocky in Rocky 3, I think it applies to Wilder. Mickey said: “Well, Rock, let’s put it this way. Now, three years ago you were supernatural. You were hard and you were nasty, and you had this cast-iron jaw, but then the worst thing happened to you, that could happen to any fighter. You got civilized.”
Deontay might not have had a cast-iron jaw, but he had the most dangerous right hand in maybe the history of boxing. Wilder was an animal, and he was unbeatable, and he was talking about wanting to kill people in the ring. He wanted his first death to occur at the end of his gloves. He was mean as hell, and street thug as hell. Then, he becomes this multi-millionaire back here in the States. Wilder becomes a businessman and does very well in that regard. He has this beautiful home, and this great life in Alabama. He tries to tap into the old self, but like all of us, Father Time is undefeated.
I think we’ve kind of arrived at the ass end of the excitement of the heavyweight division. It went on for quite some time. We had some great matchups in recent years. We had a lot of “dodging” of great matchups. But it’s been exciting, and I would say for the last 5-plus years now. But today it’s kind of winding down. There are not a whole lot of matches I’m looking forward to or care about after this rematch with Fury and Usyk. The next level of heavyweights is not very exciting to me. Not to say that that cannot change, but I’m not blown away right now by what’s coming up. I think we might go into a low-energy phase when it comes to the heavyweight division. Hopefully, I am wrong. I’ll keep my eye on Richard Torrez Jr.
