December 28, 2024Gen-X’s Vote Won 2024 Election
Generation X, born between the mid-1960s and early 1980s, has often been seen as the “forgotten generation,” overshadowed by Baby Boomers and Millennials. But with the 2024 election, Gen X has shown its influence. Characterized by resilience, skepticism of authority, and a desire for practicality over idealism, many Gen Xers cast their vote for Donald Trump, seeing him as a candidate who resonates with their unique outlook and values.
Shaped by events like the end of the Cold War, the rise of the internet, the Great Recession, and a rapidly globalizing world, Generation X is more adaptable and pragmatic than previous generations. They grew up as latchkey kids, often left to navigate challenges independently, and developed a sense of resourcefulness and self-reliance that differentiates them from both the Baby Boomers and Millennials. This independence has influenced their political choices: many Gen Xers lean toward policies that promote individual freedom and economic opportunity over governmental control.
Gen X’s skepticism also makes them wary of institutional power and media narratives. Raised in an era when distrust in authority surged and was spurred on by events like Watergate and the economic struggles of the 1970s as kids, they tend to question the mainstream media’s role and seek alternative viewpoints. In the 2024 election, Gen X voters were drawn to candidates who challenge the status quo, and many found Trump’s stance on issues like government overreach, censorship, and traditional values appealing.
In recent years, Gen X has also shouldered substantial responsibilities. Many are in the prime of their careers, supporting families, and some are even caring for aging parents. They’ve seen firsthand the effects of economic instability, the challenges of rising costs, and a society often polarized by extreme ideologies. Their vote reflects a pragmatic approach, focused on creating a stable, prosperous future for the next generation while maintaining traditional values and freedoms.
While younger generations are often driven by social issues and Progressive ideals, Gen X places a high value on balance and moderation, wanting a government that enables rather than controls. In casting their vote, many Gen Xers hoped to prioritize economic growth, reduce government interference, and ensure policies that allow individuals to thrive independently.
The influence of Gen X in the 2024 election highlights how each generation’s unique experiences shape political views. Although “we” may not dominate the cultural landscape, Gen X’s role as a bridge between generations may guide a balanced, grounded approach to future policy decisions. As far as the 2024 presidential election, it was won by Gen X, and as my oldest friend in the world said, we won with common sense.
