March 19, 2025DeSantis Sparks Debate On Property Taxes
Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida is on a mission to abolish property taxes in his state. The governor claimed that once you have bought your land, it is yours, not the government’s, musing publicly that paying the government taxes on your property is akin to paying the government “lot rent” for the privilege of owning your own land. Other states like Pensylvania followed the concept, and a revolution over who owned your land had begun.
This debate has been a long time coming and, for me, a subject matter that I have long been passionate about. Personally, I have witnessed my family and my wife’s family lose homes that were paid for, with no mortgage, because they were taxed out of their home by the government. I do consider this practice of property tax to be an afront on freedom and the concept of fairness as a whole. I feel once you buy land, it is yours and should stay in your family for all of time. Our families should be able to build generational wealth and not have the government target us in this way.
I understand the argument that counties across America have become reliant on funding their schools with property taxes. However, our schools are a global disgrace, and that money for decades has been wasted. I also feel it is time for local governments to find another revune source to pay for the education of their children. That burden should not be on the shoulders of land and home owners, especially ones who don’t even have kids. Property taxes are an anathema to a so-called free nation and should be scrubbed from our collective once and for all.
Today, in most places, if you fail to pay your property taxes for three straight years, the government, or anybody for that matter, has the ability to swoop in, pay the tax, and steal the land. In a country with a growing homeless problem, this practice seems nonsensical. Targeting land and homeowners to acquire their residence over time through tax policy contributes to America’s homeless explosion and is evil. I hope the Governor of Florida gets the backing of all Americans and a revolution on property taxes unfolds from coast to coast. I wish Godspeed to Ron DeSantis. This fight has been a long time coming.
