June 19, 2024Boxing Judges Shock in Puerto Rico
This weekend (6/15/24) I wasn’t going to pay for the pay-per-view with Tank Davis vs. Frank Martin. I thought that was a foregone conclusion with Tank. I do not believe anyone is going to beat Gervonta “Tank” Davis anytime in the next few years. There is nobody out there that can beat him. Now there is talk about a Davis/Lomachenko fight and I will not pay for that either. Lomo cannot beat Tank, and I do not need to light my money on fire to know this.
I believe we will see another era like when Bernard Hopkins was unbeatable. From February 1990 until 1992 Hopkins won 21 fights in a row. He blasted 16 of them by knockout and 12 of them in the first round. Tank Davis is going to have a similar run, so until someone can truly take him on, the Per-per-views overlords will not be getting any of my money. There are way too many fights that are pay-per-view that do not rise to that stature. Greed is out of control in the sport of boxing.
Another thing that is out of control is the judging in the sport. It has become so damn corrupt that everyone expects these treasonous decisions to happen one fight after the other. After the public sees a fight one way, and the judges give the loser the win the other way, we should check their milieu. I say go check their driveways for new cars, check their bank accounts for flush transfers, and see if the crestfallen wife is all of a sudden walking around with a smile on her face. It has become beyond scandalous, it is calumniatory and takes the wind out of the sail of true boxing fans.
So, I was thrilled this weekend when the judges shocked the world in the Subriel Matias vs. Liam Paro fight and did the right thing. I was just so thrilled because the Aussie Paro who came from Australia had everything against him. The referee Luis Pabon from Puerto Rico was out of his mind trying to do Liam in. The uproarious crowd was against Paro from start to finish. Matias is like a Puerto Rican god to these people, and he is a wrecking machine that no one wants to get in a ring with. When all of these stars align the usual outcome is predictable and the interloper goes home emptyhanded.
However, not this time, Paro used sweet science and earned his victory and the belt. The Australian put on a boxing clinic and the underdog beat the favorite. All three judges did the right thing. The scores were 115-112, 116-111, and 115-112, all in favor of the visitor Liam Paro. I mean, when it happens, it should happen normally like that, and it should not be a big deal. But, because of what goes on in the sport with all of the speculation, when I see something like that, I’m like wow. I’m reminded that’s the way it’s supposed to be. Call me crazy, but I believe the winner should be declared such.
