January 9, 2025Post-Pandemic Customer Service Crisis
One of the things my better half and I have noticed in the last couple of years is the horrible customer service we have gotten from everything from a drive-thru burger place to the constant cashiers in bad moods at so many stores. During the pandemic when so many Americans were out of work, one would think the people who do have jobs now would appreciate that. Strangely enough, it seems to us that the opposite is true. I can’t believe how many times, even in the last few months, we have gone to stores, restaurants, or other places and were treated poorly or the food was horrible.
We grew up in the 1980s and customer service was king. We both had several jobs dealing with the public in our younger years and if we didn’t have a smile on our face and treated people kindly, we found ourselves out of a job. You couldn’t come to work late without repercussions. The ninety-day probationary period was a real thing, and we always gave two weeks’ notice if we were switching jobs. That world has passed and in its place is an everyman-for-themselves type of milieu. This is not something up for debate, I know many folks who have had these bad experiences post-pandemic. Somehow quality has all been lost, and the customer service from so many different companies and restaurants has been off the scale bad.
So, looking at customer service after the pandemic I declare it is worse than ever. I know we are not alone on this one. The food comes out cold, the items I once liked are gone, and the service is atrocious. I do want to shout out for the one company that has the absolute best service anywhere and that is Five Guys Burger and Fries! Not only do they have one of the best burgers and fries, but also their customer service brings me back to the day when “the customer is always right.”
I rarely go to chain restaurants and try to spend my money on Mom-and-Pop places. A family-owned pizzeria will give you a better pizza pie than all of the corporate chains that we are familiar with. For now, if you treat us like crap, no more business from us anymore. The customer pays your salary Ms. Angry bank teller, server, or cashier. How about a smile or is that too much to ask? How about moving over and letting someone else in that job who would appreciate it? Things are very different post-pandemic in so many ways, don’t get me started on shrinkflation.
