December 25, 2024A Word About Tyson Fury
As a boxing fan, I want to thank Tyson Fury for his entertaining career. It was something special to follow. In and out of the ring the story of Tyson Fury is riveting and enigmatic. Tyson gave us a Heavyweight Division worth following again after a period of mislaid pugilism. Watching the sunset on an undefeated career people can’t help but feel that loss with Fury, it feels personal.
We feel we were with Tyson through his ups and downs because Tyson Fury lies within us. Fury’s dance with cocaine, alcohol, and whatever drug is something many of us can relate to. The way Tyson fought that and overcame those addictions is the story of tens of millions of people around the world. We collectively watched Tyson Fury rise from the ashes and return to his career triumphant over our demons.
Also, it can’t be overlooked how Tyson’s battle with mental health issues was another relatable thing about the man. I’d bet a dollar against a donut that there are even more people who can relate to those issues than the drug thing. Fury’s constant battle with his mental health was out in the open for all of us to see and learn from. When his mental health got the best of him by bringing out the worst in him, Tyson always knocked it back and returned to the professional athlete he was and is.
At the end of Tyson Fury’s career, whether he steps down graciously or not, there is one axiom that is inescapable. The trilogy that Tyson fought with Deontay Wilder took almost everything out of those two men. Both warriors left everything in that ring in those three fights. Neither man was ever the same again and began to lose bouts to lesser fighters afterward. It drained both men, both GREAT heavyweights, and there was never going back to the Tyson Fury or the Deontay Wilder before that trilogy for either man. Those two men gave us the greatest boxing trilogy in the history of the sport, they are true gladiators and in our Colosseum, which is the ring, they DID entertain us. Oleksandr Usyk will never be able to say that.
