Has anybody noticed that in America we seem to be having an unusual amount of product recalls? There have always been recalled products, but the preponderance of these recent recalls has exploded as of late. Nothing seems safe anymore and one has to ask now whether or not America has forgotten how to mass-produce things. While I was literally drafting this article, Walmart recalled nearly 10,000 cases of apple juice sold in stores across the U.S. that were found to contain potentially harmful levels of inorganic arsenic.
As members of Generation X, we are no strangers to recall. Our generation had the mother of all recalls when in September 1982 Johnson & Johnson recalled all of its Tylenol products after 13 people joined the afterlife taking pills that were purchased in the Chicago area. It came out that some lunatic had entered retail stores and tampered with the bottles. The murderer added potassium cyanide to Tylenol products killing many people.
Even with that experience of Gen-X, it does seem like we are currently under a storm of recalls. At this point, things are getting scary. You don’t know what to buy anymore or how to keep safe. So many recalls come out that most folks are just ignoring the constant hubbub. Many people I know do not seem to care at all. There is so much government cacophony that it is falling on deaf ears. The warnings have become the Chicken Little of Public Health. Right or wrong, after the pandemic, people just do not believe or listen to Public Health Officials anymore.
According to a report published by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group and other public reports, Product recalls have been increasing since the pandemic, and in 2023, the number of recalls reached a seven-year high. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recorded 313 food recalls and public health alerts in 2023, with the top reasons being: Undeclared allergens, Listeria, Salmonella, Not inspected or reinspected, and foreign matter.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture which is in charge of regulating meat, poultry, and eggs has been busy lately. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration which oversees all other foods has recorded record high public health alerts. That is a lot of food to keep an eye on. I gander to say that Americans will have a timid attention span with something that could kill them.
However, I can’t blame folks for letting all of this go in one ear and out the other. It seems almost impossible to keep up with these recalls. Whether it is products or food, the avalanche of modern recalls is burying Americans under a pile of never-ending Public Health Warnings. This Recallorama takes on an Orwellian tone. You know, “We’re the government and we are here to help” kind of nightmare. All of this gives a new meaning to Buyer Beware.
Robert Kennedy Jr. joining forces with Donald Trump to clean up the supply chain and police our food is something very welcomed by millions of Americans. Putting Kennedy in charge of the chicanery of the pharmaceutical industry is a real thing. RFK Jr. will laser focus on the food and medicine Americans put in their bodies.
Get ready for these recalls to slow down dramatically. Robert says give him two years and he will turn all of this disease and dysfunction around, and we believe him. The Pharmaceutical industry and others will go into a panic attack, while Robert Kennedy Jr. and former President Donald Trump “Make America Healthy Again.”
