Schools nationwide are working to balance gay and religious rights ever since a U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowed a law school to deny recognition to a Christian group that did not allow gay members.
The decision in June 2010 backed a policy at California’s Hastings College of Law that denied the Christian Legal Society’s attempts to win official recognition.
Experts say the decision applies to public schools that have so-called all-comers policies, which require campus groups to open leadership to anyone. Experts say since the ruling, both public and private schools have reassessed policies. A handful of schools are considering changes.
Some Christians say forcing them to accept leaders who don’t hold their beliefs is an attack on religious freedom. Others say excluding gays for any reason is discrimination.
