Washington abandoned millions of long term unemployed by failing to include any help in their “so called” unemployment extension in HR 4213 even though the Senate sold this in the media as “extending vital emergency benefits through the end of this year”. Truth is they lied. ENOUGH of the little 6 week extensions for only a few states. The economy will not be fixed in 6 weeks. The long term unemployed in all 50 states need Congress to extend the weekly benefits through the end of 2010 and hopefully do it before their Spring Vacation. We cannot wait.

Important Dates for Unemployment Compensation Beneficiaries
Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC)
- November 20, 2010 – Under current federal law, customers receiving regular state unemployment benefits must exhaust those benefits by the week ending November 20, 2010 to be eligible for additional federal EUC benefits.
- November 27, 2010 – Under current federal law, customers already receiving federal EUC benefits may be eligible for the next tier (EUC Tiers II, III, or IV) provided their previous tier is exhausted by the week ending November 27, 2010.
- November 28, 2010 – Under current federal law, whichever tier EUC customers are in as of November 28, 2010 will be the final tier for which they will qualify. While EUC customers will be allowed to complete their current tier, they will not be able to advance to the next tier.
- April 30, 2011 – Under current federal law, EUC benefits will not be paid after the week ending April 30, 2011.
- At this time, no additional EUC benefits have been enacted by Congress. Only the federal government can extend the EUC program.
- The Agency for Workforce Innovation will notify customers by mail when they receive their final EUC payments.
Extended Benefits (EB)
- November 27, 2010 – Under current law, customers who exhaust all entitlement to regular state benefits and EUC by the week ending November 27, 2010 can establish eligibility for EB.
- December 4, 2010 – Due to federal funding limitations, Extended Benefits (EB) will no longer be paid after the week ending December 4, 2010. Amounts remaining on customers’ EB accounts beyond the week ending December 4 will no longer be payable.
- The Agency for Workforce Innovation will notify customers by mail when they receive their final EB payments.
Federal Additional Compensation (FAC)
- December 11, 2010 – Under current federal law, FAC (the additional $25 weekly benefits) will not be paid after the week ending December 11, 2010.
- The Agency for Workforce Innovation will notify customers by mail when they receive their final FAC payments.

Julie from Kansas City Mo. I lost my job 4-09 and have exhausted my unemployment. I have sent out my resume online in person daily and still no job. I as well as many others did not ask to be unemployed, I’m 49 have started over 3 times in my life with 2 kids, went back to college have experience and still no job. People need the tiers 5….until we find a job. Are we all supposed to live in the streets??? I can’t buy food, pay rent, or my other bills. I have B.S. and M.S dagrees + years of experience. I have been unemployed for 1+ year. I have been sending my resumes to many jobs – entry level – mid level – senior level ANY LEVEL, ANY SALARY. some interviews , some calls, rejection letters, but still no job. This is not my fault, PLEASE HIRE ME. I NEED A JOB.
Losing job and income was very hard, now, looking for a job and receiving rejection letters is even worse and very depressing, and to add salt to the injury worse – my unemployment , the only sourse of income. is about to stop coming. It does not even make me feel ” worse” or ” depressing” , no, it is much much worse, it makes me feel feel suicidal.
And yet again, the 99ers are concidered the parasites feeding off of road kill……we do not even exist.

We have all been immersed so long in the Capitalist system of every man/woman for himself that we have lost any ability to come up with a solution that is humane for those that are hurting. Estimates of jobless Americans is 17 million – that is the entire population of Australia – yet we cannot come up with a solution that helps them.
Here is an idea. Only about 3% of the land of this country is used for urbanization – 3%! Around 36% is held by the Government and the rest is privately owned. I say let’s take another 3% of land held by Government and turn it into settlements for those that choose to live there. The land can be held in Trust and the only requirement of folks living there would be to manage their own food production, build housing and have communal schools for educating kids and adults that need it. The work required individually to maintain it would likely require no more than a few hours a day of individual labor. And the rest of the day could be spent raising kids, learning a trade, loving each other…
People don’t need food stamps and handouts they need to be valid, respected members of the society.
Anybody got an idea about how to insist that this be the solution?

I am 57, and have been unemployed for more than a year. I have college and more than 40 years of work experience, yet no one will hire me. I have a few weeks of unemployment left, and am trying to find two or three part-time jobs to be able to at least pay the rent. I am riding my cheap vintage motorcycle, as insurance for it is only $75 a year, vs. $1200 for my car. I have been hard-working, solidly middle class all my life, and the down slide into poverty has been quite a shock. Where is all the job-creation legislation that we need? At least my Dad’s generation had the W.P.A. and the C.C.C. to help, and the prosperity that WWII brought to workers.
What more can be said of the situation, massive unemployment long-term. It is apparent that many are middle and upper level management or long term in a particular endeavor of work. Apart from education and experience it is the age of so many whom have been unemployed for the longer periods of time. For the vast majority of us we have worked all our adult lives and now face the worst economic conditions in our life times. For those who are elgible to take social security early, well some income is better than none, even with the monetary loss to the individual. For myself I don’t have that option, would take anything if I could get hired, but “overqualified” is the mantra of low level skill jobs, convinience stores fast food ect. Why? Because, first they know that someone with experience and education will leave for a better paying job at the first opportunity. Second, the pool of under educated people is huge and they can with some assurance plan on that individual to stay. It is a catch-22.
The government must come up with a plan for the 99ers because in reality as these people have no income the costs to the states and federal government will be higher as the 99ers seek welfare assistance, food stamps, section 8 housing, ect. Tier V makes economic sense, keeping people afloat till they find employment while pumping needed revenue into a lethargic economy. It not only makes sense but it is the moral act to do.
I have exhausted my benefits, I am a 99er. I work part time.
I picked up a part time position doing physical labor in a grocery store, I am 56 yrs young. I have no savings, no husband, no 401k, no credit cards to pay for anything. I have my 27 yr old living with me he is also employed part time at the same supermarket I am. Combined without unemployment we are bringing in $375/wk my rent is $980, car payment is $351. The area we live in is where we grew up and always middle class style of living. If we forfeit the car, we cannot get to the part time job. We are in suburbia, no buses on every corner like some city areas. So yesterday I applied for food stamps, housing and utility payment help, from the State of NJ. So is that going to solve the problem of the deficit. What I want to know is
this, for 39 years I have worked sometimes 3 jobs at once and paid into unemployment on every job, and the employers have all matched that, so where the hell is the money???
I will be homeless if they deny housing and food stamp assistance. What a shame to think that I live in the land of the free and the land of opportunity. This government will have a lot of trouble before long, as people will be hungry, cold, angry and not really care anymore if they get arrested, at least then they will have a roof and 3 meals. How dare any of those big shots in Washington tell me I am lazy and get off my butt and unemployment, I challenge any one of them to come do my job for 1 day for less than $9 hour, and then get told by the government I don’t deserve any more assistance. Go to hell!!
I worked for 40 years, now I’m 61 and feel this country that I fought for as an Infantry Soldier, in Viet Nam 40 years ago is turning it’s back. It is astounding to me, that Tier 5 is not being considered for all those ’99ers who remain unemployed, unable to find a job, and are in states with less than 8.5% unemployment, but still are not seeing job growth or realistic opportunities for even an interview. Either provide tax incentives to businesses to hire, reduce their taxes rather than raise them, or please, for God’s sake, show some compassion for those of us that want to work,can’t, and are at the end of any financial alternatives to survive.
As to the comments above about “Bums get a job”, being “Lazy”, go try again, etc., these are really disgusting. I have a BBA, MBA, both from prestigous universities, and look for a job daily, and have been doing that since my layoff. I AM NOT LAZY! For you or anyone to generalize such a comment and imply that all of this nation’s unemployed are unemployable, lazy, wanting to just live on the government, don’t understand the problem, and the impact of this economy, and the decisions being made in Congress which are not stimulating employment, but rather adding to the further growth of the unemployed, and are going to threaten everyone of you who currently have a job!
