Imagine, if you would, you’re a painter named Joe with a family. You worked all year long painting houses. You provided, all year long, by getting up each morning to that nefarious alarm clock and crawling outside into the rat race to do your duty. For Joe, Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday, because you get to be with family and have good food, yet you’re not required to buy anyone gifts that would break your monthly budget.

Joe woke up the morning of Thanksgiving and made his coffee while running to the TV to turn on the Macy’s Parade. He was excited that he didn’t have to go to work and he got to spend the day smelling all of the great aromas coming out of the kitchen. While the day seemed to go as planned, just about the time the table was dressed and ready for everyone to eat, there was a knock at the door. Joe got up off of the couch with a frosted mug of apple cider in his hand and went to answer the door. When he open it up, a cool autumn breeze swept though the doorway.

To Joe’s surprise it was Uncle Sam with a gun. He had a line of people in line behind him. Joe recognized some of the people in the line. There were neighbors down the block who never worked, sat around all day drinking and carrying on, but never seem to accomplish anything. Their  lawns were always unkept and Joe pretty much always avoided them because he thought they were “the bums.”

Well Uncle Sam said, with a gun in his hand, that Joe had to let everyone in to eat up all the food his wife had spread out on the dining room table. Joe said to Uncle Sam that this wasn’t fair.

Joe said, “I work hard all year long and these people do nothing. Why do they get to eat the food when they didn’t contribute to putting it together.”

Uncle Sam said, “With the power of the State, we declare this a community dinner.”

The people, single file, walked into Joe’s house while Uncle Sam stood at the door and said “Welcome to the First Annual Obama Thanksgiving in America! Happy Thanksgiving!”

Joe looked at Uncle Sam and said, “How did this happen?”

Uncle Sam looked at Joe’s stricken face and said, “Thanksgiving is too big to fail! ”
