With the midterm elections just around the corner, I’m sitting back watching the ascension of Florida Governor Charlie Christ for United States Senate and then on to the White House. I’m so desirous for the Republican Party to do well, if not take back congress all together. However, if the issue of Charlie Christ and his sexuality does not come to a head soon, this whole thing will blow up in all our faces.
The film Outrage, that is making its rounds on cable for the whole country to see, is shocking. This film makes a convincing argument that Charlie is a gay or bi-sexual man who is hiding that fact. He is just pounding gay people with anti-gay rights laws and that seems hypocritical to me. Now I don’t care whether Charlie likes men or not, but I feel that he should be honest about all this. While he does things like block gay couples from adopting children who are rotting away in foster homes and orphanages, he makes Floridians complicit in this anathema. If we back him on his ascension and this whole thing blows up once we get him there, we will again be the laughing stock and poster boys for hypocrisy yet again.
I for one am convinced with the premise set forth in the film Outrage and believe this is true. It is just my gut that this film has merit with this subject. I would rather see Charlie be the Republican Barney Frank, backed and loved by all of us, instead of the dishonest way this thing is headed.
There are Gay Conservatives and there is room for people from the Log Cabin Wing of the party to succeed in politics. If someone would just try, they will make history. I think most conservatives would judge people by their own merits and not where or who they lay there head down with. Dishonesty, hypocrisy and lies are not and should never be a conservative byproduct.
If Charlie Crist would come out of the closet, I’m a conservative that will support that kind of bravery and back him to the end. At the same time, if he doesn’t address this film being played on cable to my satisfaction, I’ll have to take a pass on Mr. Charlie Crist. The base is already slipping away and they will back someone else. I’m already hearing the rumblings because slowly this is all coming out. If someone is advising you to try to get to the top and keep this hidden, you need to fire that person right now Mr. Governor. If you get this all out first, the base will back you. It gives the right an opportunity to show the world that we don’t hate gay people. You can be the catalyst to show the country that conservatives are not bigots and show there is room for gay people in the Republican Party.
If this film has this right about you Charlie, it won’t be your sexuality that prevents you from reaching the pinnacle of your political career. It will be your hypocrisy my dear governor.
